So, Fred Thompson throws his hat in the ring 3 days after we move back to the US.
I used to tell people that SARS broke out right after I left China, the ruble crashed soon after I left Russia, I was in Berlin instead of DC on September 11 and in Hamburg instead of London on July 7.
And now this . . . But I'm not saying how I feel about the rebirth of Reagan.
I mean heck, I was a big fan of his when he played Knox Pooley on Wiseguy. [Disclaimer: I looked up the name of his character. However, I do recall that he played a white supremacist who wasn't really racist but just touted the policy to get power.] But seriously, this guy?
I mean I sat out most of the Bush administration in the more liberal countries of England and China. I don't think I could take Knox Pooley leadership for this country in the state that it's in right now. We need less Bush "common sense" and more Thomas Paine Common Sense.
At least that's my sense of it.

Based on your comments it seems to me that Ireland is closer to the US, in this aspect, than either the UK or China. By the way, big fan of the way you slipped in the observation that China is a more liberal country than the US - LOL - I know (having lived it) that the Bush's America seemed to be a pendulum swing away from Bubba's America, but less liberal than China...controversial! Would it not be more accurate to portray the US, under Bush's governance, as having moved much closer to China's model of unregulated government and reduced civil rights?
thinking laterally about the next US president, you have to like Thompson's chances really...when it comes down to it the conservative right are not going to vote for Guiliani (he's just too out there), the moderate right are not going to vote for Romney (he's a Morman for God's sake - they are just too kooky to put in the oval office). On the left you have Obama and Clinton, regardless of who gets the nod, is America ready to vote in a black or a woman (even worse a Clinton woman) president, unfortunately I think not - my figuring is that this race will become devisive and will send centerist democrats off in search of a moderate right candidate, enter Reagan II. Thompson doesn't even need to bring an agenda to the table, a sense that he's stable and can manage the financial and foreign policy mess that Bush is leaving behind should be comfort enough (the voting public over there have been thru a lot in the last 7 years expectations are low). Besides perhaps Reagan II would not be the worst thing to happen, a single term cleanup administration that can work with a democratic house and senate doesn't sound too bad huh?
